Don’t Toss It - Gloss It! Christmas Crafting with Vinyl Scraps

Turn Your Vinyl Scraps into Custom Christmas Gift Labels

Written by Sticky Vinyl Australia blogger, Kat M.

Hey Sticky Vinyl friends and family! With Christmas around the corner, we’re kicking off our blog to help inspire you and your crafts for this silly season. Today’s craft requires no extra bits and pieces! Whether you’re a seasoned vinyl crafter or just starting out, this project is easy and for everyone.

Even when you’re just starting with vinyl, you’ll find you end up with off-cuts and scraps. These bits aren’t quite big enough for that next project, but not small enough to justify ending up in the bin. If you’re anything like us, these pieces accumulate in storage somewhere with the promise that one day you’ll use them. Well, look no further – that day is today!

Step 1: Turn Scraps into Christmas Labels

In preparation for Christmas, we’ve been busy wrapping our gifts, and what better way to personalise them than to label them! No need to purchase Christmas sticker labels – this is a quick, easy way to elevate your Christmas wrapping.

Just take your offcut, measure it, and fit the name to that scrap in Cricut Design Space. We’ve used transfer paper that’s not too sticky so it doesn’t damage or pull up our wrapping paper.

In only a few minutes, you have a custom present label and you’ve recycled your bits and pieces!

Step 2: Use Free Fonts for Extra Personality

Don’t like the fonts Cricut Design Space has to offer and don’t want to spend a fortune? There are many websites online that allow you to generate sample text that you can load into Design Space. For our present labels, we’ve used a font called “Peanut Butter” that can be found here . Below is how we get custom fonts into Design Space.

Using the website linked above, we typed our present name in and clicked “Generate”.

Don’t worry too much about the size here – we’ll fix that in Design Space. Right-click on the generated text and save your image. In Design Space, go to Upload and select your file. Depending on what website you use, the file type may be different; ours is a PNG.

Cricut Design Space will give you options to convert the file to a usable cut template. For our labels we only need a simple, single-layer cut.

Continue through the upload process and your label will be added to your canvas. This is where we can resize our name to fit our vinyl offcuts. Keep the proportions locked to keep your font looking the same, then adjust the width or height to fit your vinyl and cut away!

And that’s it – you have your custom font in Design Space, free of charge!

Step 3: Use This Hack All Year Round

This project is great for recycling those saved scraps, and while it’s a perfect fit for Christmas gifts, this hack can be used all year round for birthdays and other special occasions.

We had some scraps of iron-on vinyl and spare ribbon, so we used this hack for some other wrapping too…
