Permanent Adhesive Vinyl

Permanent adhesive vinyl is a sticky-backed craft vinyl used to create decals, labels, and designs for smooth, hard surfaces such as drink bottles, windows, signs, acrylic, glass, plastic, and metal.

What is it?

Learn more about permanent adhesive vinyl

Permanent adhesive vinyl is a thin, flexible vinyl film with a pressure-sensitive adhesive on the back. It is cut into a design using a cutting machine such as a Cricut, Scan n Cut, Silhouette, Roland, Siser, then weeded to remove the excess vinyl, before being transferred onto a surface using transfer tape.

Unlike heat transfer vinyl, permanent adhesive vinyl does not require a heat press or an iron to bond. It sticks when firm pressure is applied, which helps the adhesive make contact with the surface underneath.

Permanent adhesive vinyl is made for hard, smooth surfaces rather than fabric. It is a great choice when you want a longer-lasting decal, label or decorative finish, especially for projects that may be handled, wiped or used regularly.

Steps to use

How to apply Permanent Adhesive Vinyl

  1. 1

    Design

    1. Create or upload your design in your cutting software.
    2. Size the design to suit your blank or surface.
  2. 2

    Cut

    1. Place the vinyl on your cutting mat with the coloured vinyl side facing up and the backing sheet facing down.
    2. Cut your design using the setting recommended for that specific vinyl product.
  3. 3

    Polishing

    1. Weed away the excess vinyl, leaving only the design on the backing paper.
    2. Apply transfer tape over the weeded design.
    3. Use a scraper or squeegee to firmly burnish the transfer tape onto the vinyl.
    4. Clean the project surface with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth and allow it to dry completely.
  4. 4

    Press with heat

    1. Peel the backing sheet away so the vinyl design stays on the transfer tape. This generally works best when you peel the backing sheet off of the transfer tape, not the transfer tape away from the backing.
    2. Position the design on your surface and press it down firmly.
    3. Burnish again with a scraper, working from the centre outwards to remove air bubbles.
  5. 5

    Finishing up

    1. Slowly peel away the transfer tape, leaving the vinyl design on the surface.
    2. Allow the adhesive to sit untouched for around 48 hours to settle before washing, handling heavily or exposing the item to moisture.

FAQs

View frequently asked questions about Permanent Adhesive Vinyl

  • Do I need to mirror permanent adhesive vinyl?

No. Permanent adhesive vinyl is usually cut with the coloured side facing up and does not need to be mirrored, unless you are applying it to the inside of glass to be viewed from the outside.

  • Is permanent adhesive vinyl the same as heat transfer vinyl?

No. Permanent adhesive vinyl has a sticky backing and is applied to hard surfaces with pressure, while heat transfer vinyl is applied to fabric using heat and pressure.

  • Can I use permanent adhesive vinyl on shirts or fabric?

No, it is not designed for fabric. For shirts, bags, hats and other fabric items, use heat transfer vinyl instead.

  • Can permanent adhesive vinyl go outside?

Many permanent adhesive vinyls are suitable for outdoor projects, but durability can vary by product, surface and weather exposure. Always check the specific product page before using it outdoors.

  • Why is my vinyl lifting after application?

Vinyl can lift if the surface is dirty, oily, dusty, textured, wet or not suited to adhesive vinyl. Clean and dry the surface first, then apply firm pressure with a scraper to help the adhesive bond properly.

  • Do I need transfer tape?

Yes, transfer tape helps lift the cut vinyl design from its backing paper and place it neatly onto your project surface, especially for lettering and detailed designs. Remember to choose a strong grip transfer tape for glitter or textured vinyl, and standard grip for smooth vinyls.
